Subdue an Unarmed Violent Subject

(191-376-5150) (2007 STP)

Conditions: While on duty and performing law enforcement duties, you are given a situation involving an unarmed violent subject who refuses to obey verbal commands and/or has become violent and needs to be apprehended. You are wearing the standard military police gear which includes a 9mm pistol, a military police straight baton, a radio, and  handcuffs. Backup patrols are available and you have a military police vehicle.

Standards: Subdue the subject using only the necessary amount of force required to control, handcuff, search, and transport the subject to the military police station to be released to the military police desk sergeant.

Performance Steps

1. Attempt to apprehend according to Task 191-376-5112 before escalating the use of force.  NOTE: Never attempt to apprehend an  armed subject unless you are left with no other options.  Escalate the level of force until the subject drops the weapon before attempting to handcuff and apprehend.  Depending on the type of weapon and the situation, you may have to attempt to apprehend and handcuff before they disarm.  When confronted with this type of situation, use your own discretion on what actions to take if time does not permit you to seek further orders on how to proceed.

2. Reassess the situation and request backup before attempting to apprehend if the subject refuses to comply with verbal commands or becomes violent.  NOTE: Continue to use your interpersonal communication skills to convince the subject to comply with your orders even after the decision to escalate the use of force, because the subject may change his demeanor at any time and a cooperative subject is easier to control than an uncooperative one.

3. Developed a plan, subdued, and handcuffed the subject, using only the level of force necessary to effect the apprehension.

4. Search the subject according to Task 191-376-5148.

5. Transport to the military police station according to Task 191-376-5123.

6. Release the subject to the military police desk sergeant.
