Physical Fitness is at the core of any unarmed combat program.  The reasons are obvious.  More law enforcement officers have been killed by donuts than by bad guys.  Plus, in an unarmed combat situation, all five components of physical fitness play a major role in determining the outcome.  As Military Police, being in shape is important in while in combat, while working law and order and just being a good Soldier.  

 

The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is the way the United States Army tests its Soldier’s fitness level.  There are three events in the APFT:  Do as many push-ups as you can in two minutes, do as many sit-ups as you can in two minutes and run as fast as you can for two miles.  You must score at least 60 points in each event with a total score of 180 points.  The maximum score you can achieve is 300 points.  The Army’s APFT scoring chart (as of October, 1998) is linked at the bottom of the page.  

 

Also linked below is the Training to Max PT program designed by SGM (RET) Rush (NCO Journal, 1993) which is highly recommended by the MPUCA.  If you follow the Training to Max PT program to the letter, you will achieve a higher APFT score (and probably a 300).  This will not only lend credibility to you as a leader and/or an unarmed combat instructor, but will further your military career and help you in your unarmed combat training and/or application.  More information on the Army’s APFT or Physical Fitness can be found in FM 21-20.  (AKO password required.)
